On January 26, 2020 the world lost one of its greatest legends, Kobe Bryant. He was a member of the exclusive club of forty-five NBA high school draftees. He surpassed shooting records and has an extraordinary list of career achievements. His perseverance and focus were legendary. His life meant a lot to many. His death devasted even more. One person that I know very well was directly affected, my husband. He and Kobe are only a few years apart in age. He looked up to him as a supreme player, an excellent businessman, as well as an endearing family man. He was deeply affected by Kobe Bryant’s death as it jarringly reminded him that life is but a vapor and even the most ‘deserving’ of life are not promised it. Over the past seven days, my spouse has experienced a renewed vigor about life and is inspired by the way Kobe lived his life, with Mamba Mentality. I asked him to explore what it means to him and I’d like to share his reflection with you.
"We all have been in a place when perseverance was the last thing on our mind. Times where we want to stop and return, about face and retreat. Or when we felt a level of success that we chased with grueling effort and succeeded. Kobe Bryant’s Mamba Mentality is a mindset that is applicable in all facets of life. Mamba Mentality is the desire to persevere against all odds. When you hit the wall and have given your all. When you feel you piqued at an apex of success? Mamba Mentality is a mindset that tells you to get up and try again and to never stop until you’ve reached success or when to break through the apex into clear space to achieve more excellence. Kobe Bryant’s effort in all things is a representation of the ultimate strength in perseverance. Never quit, blitz through, and now you have tasted success, that is when you set it aside and crave more and go get it!"
As we enter a month where we celebrate the contributions and achievements of African Americans and recognize the central role of blacks in U.S. history, I hope that everyone takes a moment to think about what Mamba Mentality means to you personally and remember that life is for living!
