Virtual Mental Health

Counseling and Psychiatric Services (CAPS)

CAPS is the place on campus for students seeking help for a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, stress management, homesickness, adjustment or acculturation, relationships, issues around race, gender and sexual orientation (LBGTQ), substance abuse, traumatic experiences, eating or body image concerns, and other personal mental health concerns. CAPS combines the clinical services counseling and psychiatry in one setting.

Our commitment to diversity means creating a welcoming, safe, inclusive, equitable, and affirming environment for each student. We believe diversity enriches learning, enhances personal growth, and takes into account all aspects of a student's identity, such as age, body size/shape, disability/ability, socioeconomic status, political affiliation, nationality, race, ethnicity, culture, religion/spirituality, language, sex, gender identity, gender expression, sexual/romantic orientation, values and beliefs.

Confidentiality

CAPS uses HIPAA-compliant Zoom and phone as virtual services platforms. All crisis and regular services will remain confidential and available virtually.

Virtual CAPS Connect

CAPS Connect is a consultation-based service for MSU students in which specific CAPS staff are assigned to unique student populations/areas of campus. Through brief 10-15 minute consultations, CAPS staff are able to listen, help students problem-solve specific issues, and develop a relationship that may transition into additional care when needed. Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, CAPS Connect was offered on-site at various locations across campus. CAPS Connect will resume during the week of September 14th-18th, 2020 and will be provided through a virtual platform. Additional information will be forthcoming detailing the logistics and how students will sign up

Care Kit

Given our current times, CAPS has produced a "Virtual Care Kit." This kit includes information on goal setting, connection, dealing with uncertainty and loss, and meaning and motivation. The virtual care kit is designed to help promote the growth and well-being of our MSU students.

Virtual Outreach Services

Since outreach services were transitioned to virtual offerings, CAPS staff have been providing virtual webinars over zoom. Additionally, there are podcasts and previously recorded videos that are available for viewing.
